Irish rider Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) won the second stage of the Tour of Spain in a mass sprint on Saturday between ‘s-Hertogenbosch and Utrecht, in the Netherlands, while the red jersey goes to the Dutch sprinter in the Jumbo -Visma Mike Teunissen, 4th in the stage on home soil. Bennett beat Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo) and Tim Merlier (Alpecin) at the end of a very calm day, with a breakaway of a few riders caught by the peloton 60 kilometers from the finish.

The Irish sprinter seized his chance on one of the six flat stages taken in this 2022 edition. This is his fourth victory in the Tour of Spain, but the first for two years.

The first Frenchman, Bryan Coquard (Cofidis), finished the stage in a disappointing 18th place.

Mike Teunissen, the Jumbo-Visma sprinter who won the inaugural team time trial in Utrecht on Friday, takes the red jersey as leader in the general classification. The former wearer of the red tunic, Robert Gesink (Jumbo), who arrived in first position in his formation on Friday in Utrecht, finished 129th on Saturday, 43 seconds behind Bennett.

EF training rider Julius Van den Berg pocketed the first two points for the best climber award in the Col d’Amerongse (4th category) ahead of Frenchman Thibault Guernalec (Arkéa-Samsic).

He will wear the blue polka dot jersey on Sunday, for the third stage of the Vuelta around Breda in the Netherlands, before joining Spain and the Basque Pyrenees from Tuesday.
